Regional Translation Lead – London
Location: Stratford, London
Contract: Permanent, 35 hours per week with high flexibility / hybrid working
Salary: £78,000 – £82,000 per annum (depending on experience) plus benefits

Cancer Research Horizons (CRH), launched in April 2022, is CRUK’s new innovation engine, built to complement and realize the full potential of CRUK’s network of world-class investigators and cancer centres, and our £400M annual R&D spend. The CRH team is tasked with accelerating the translation of cutting-edge innovations into treatments, diagnostic and medical devices by bringing together the expertise, capabilities, and resources of CRUK and its academic network with that of industry partners and investors.
The Search & Evaluation (S&E) Team works across the Cancer Research UK network to promote and facilitate the translation of Cancer Research UK-funded research into innovations that will benefit the lives of patients. We work with researchers to identify projects with patient benefit potential, developing them into investable propositions for onward development by commercial partners. We also promote and support translation of academic research through a wide range of activities.
As the S&E Regional Translation Lead for London, you will lead a team of Translation Managers and Executives with responsibility for supporting and enabling translation of academic cancer research from academic institutions across the London region. You will have a strong scientific background in oncology research and excellent knowledge and experience of translating oncology research into commercially viable opportunities.
You will develop and implement a strategic plan for London to increase researcher engagement with translational activity and work with the other Regional Translation Leads to develop and implement nationwide strategies. As an expert in the translation of academic research, you will play a key role in the critical evaluation and onward development of new project opportunities, working closely with colleagues across Commercial Partnerships and the CRUK network to do so. You will engage with a variety of strategic partners across the London Region, bringing to bear your political and relationship management skills to influence key decision makers.
What will you be doing?
Accountability, directly and through line reports, for opportunity sourcing and translation of CRUK-funded research
Build and maintain strong, integrated relationships across all high-level regional stakeholders, including with laboratories identified as key partners, and with Centre/University senior management figures and senior CRUK-funded scientists
Responsibility for development regional strategic objectives within allocated geographical region, and their delivery directly and through line reports, to support the attainment of overall S&E targets
Work closely with S&E AD to ensure support to CRUK strategic funding initiatives such as TRACERx and Cancer Grand Challenges
Oversight and management of regional technology portfolio
Managing S&E Translation Executives (TEs) and Translation Managers (TMs), supporting their development and ensuring KPIs are achieved
Provide appropriate technology transfer and intellectual property protection services and advice in a timely manner
Work collaboratively with colleagues from other S&E regions to proactively seek collaborative and synergistic interactions
Work collaboratively with colleagues from other S&E regions to proactively support Cancer Research Horizons Therapeutic Innovation sourcing and strategic objectives
Work in collaboration with internal colleagues focused in other CP core function teams to develop and manage CP’s overall operations, performance and strategies
Contribute to developing and implementing strategy to enhance and grow the entrepreneurial culture across CRUK-funded researchers, to maximise output of CRUK funding
Implementing strategic initiatives to support therapeutic discovery and development at CRUK and playing a key role in the build of new ventures and strategic alliances through horizon scanning activities
Support CP, (including Cancertools) and R&I management with cross department activities as required
Provide expert translational advice to scientists, institutions and R&I, through well-developed communication links
Routine contract negotiation and management in liaison with BD&T and Legal colleagues
Provide expert specialist knowledge and advice to CP colleagues in a specific area of technology translation.
Who are we looking for?
PhD (or equivalent) in a scientific or healthcare discipline, ideally oncology/technology-related
In-depth experience in translating discovery research and pre-clinical science gained in sectors such as medical technologies, diagnostics, healthcare technologies and pharmaceuticals. This experience may have been gained in industry, healthcare, academia or in non-profit organisations
Excellent working knowledge and experience of the patent filing and prosecution process
Strong experience of negotiating research-related contracts including MTAs, research collaboration agreements etc
Can demonstrate ability to develop strategic approaches to translating scientific innovation into products
Ability to drive an entrepreneurial spirit and think creatively
Proven competences in
Driving to ensure that the best possible high standard of results are delivered to our stakeholders
Grasping technical concepts quickly, and translating these into commercially viable proposals
Working effectively with key stakeholders, showing excellent influencing skills and where appropriate having tenacity and persistence
Deploying excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both verbally and in writing with the ability to build and maintain strong relationships
Identifying strategies for transferring technologies to industry
Work collaboratively within a cross-functional team to deliver the scientific, commercial and operational objectives of the overall function
In-depth knowledge and awareness of oncology drug/technology discovery, IP protection and development and associated science
Proven scientific judgement and project management skills, together with a broad-based business acumen and proven operational delivery
Proven experience of leading and developing a team
