Would you like to play a critical part in the next revolution of human-computer interaction? The Apple Machine Translation team is building groundbreaking technology that enables connecting people across language barriers. We are looking for an Applied Research Engineer passionate about developing and optimizing solutions to create, maintain, and ship scalable, high-quality model assets for multiple languages supporting Apple’s Machine Translation products such as the Translate App, Safari web translation, and system-wide translation.
Description

Apple’s Machine Translation technology is embedded across the iOS, iPadOS, macOS, and watchOS ecosystems. It powers features like the Translate App, which helps users communicate across different languages, and system-wide translation for quick translation of highlighted text in numerous languages. Your role will be crucial in applying and improving data and model training pipelines to support new languages and enhance translation quality in shipped models. You will join a motivated, dynamic team managing data acquisition projects, training neural machine translation models, and establishing evaluation criteria that set new standards for translation quality in Apple’s products.
Minimum Qualifications

Strong programming and software engineering skills (Python, C++, Java, or equivalent)
Experience in developing machine translation, speech recognition, or natural language processing systems
Proficiency in large-scale data processing (Spark, Dask, or equivalent) and data management/analytics
Excellent communication skills, a team player, capable of managing complex processes across stakeholders, with a motivation to create exceptional products for Apple’s customers
Preferred Qualifications

Proven experience in software engineering, focusing on developing robust applications
Familiarity with deep learning and neural machine translation is a plus
Experience with distributed cloud computing environments (GCP, AWS) is a plus
