Site Interpreter Full Time on the ground

Site Interpreter is responsible for assisting with the seasonal operation and tours of the historic mill and grounds.

Pay Rate: $17.00 per hour

Major Duties/Specific Tasks

• Assists with public relations by greeting park visitors, handling inquiries, providing information and assistance, and informing patrons of rules and regulations.
• Provides tours of the grounds educating guests on the history of Aldie and its founder Charles Fenton Mercer emphasizing importance of the site, buildings, millrace, Little River, and Little River Turnpike.
• Provides tours of the Merchant Mill main floor, grinding decks, gear pit, and Miller’s office explaining Oliver Evan’s technology, the milling process, grinding equipment, and history of ownership and labor.
• Assists with school programs, field trips, workshops, and presentations at the mill.
• Attends and participates in staff meetings and in-service training.
• Reports unsafe conditions, matters of theft, or illegal action to the Historic Site Manager.
• Carries out additional duties as assigned by Historic Site Manager.

Minimum Qualifications

• Ability to communicate effectively and courteously with the public.
• Ability to work during Mill tour hours, Saturdays and Sundays, April through October, from 10:45 AM to 4:15 PM.
• Demonstrates reliability, punctuality, and flexibility.
• Ability to learn the operation of the facility, tour mechanics, security of buildings, and historic collections stewardship.
• Ability to work in all job-related environments, including inclement and varying weather conditions, extreme heat and cold; and to potentially encounter allergens and insects.
• Ability to work flexible schedules including weekends, holidays, and special events.
• Possession or ability to obtain a Certification in CPR/First Aid.
• Ability to maintain safety and security procedures to ensure the safety of colleagues and guests.
• Ability to pass a criminal background check.
